After last year’s apparent murder-suicide of an elderly Port Vue man and his adult son with disabilities, United Way of Allegheny County convened leaders in the public and private sectors to strategize about preventing similar tragedies in the future. Based on research conducted by CMU’s Heinz College, the United Way launched the “I Care” initiative. Businesses, community groups, churches and individuals like mail carriers who participate in I Care help identify vulnerable people who may need support, based on warning signs such as a neglected yard or increased social isolation.
