Amidst a sea of social challenges and demands on their resources, funders have forged different approaches to achieve greater impact for their dollars and consequent social change.  Some funders have expanded their financial resources with investments and strategies along the continuum of impact investing instruments.  Others are adopting longer-term capacity-building strategies to insure that grantees have the bandwidth to tackle complex social problems – addressing the capitalization and business models of nonprofits.  Both approaches merit attention, especially now as key national initiatives offer lessons learned, traction gained  and early results.

The Philanthropy Forum at GSPIA, GWP, The Forbes Funds and Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Partnership (GPNP) are collaborating to present a series of programs focused on investing for greater impact.  The first session, held in January 2015, explored the topic of impact investing/mission investing.  In this second session, we will consider deeper capitalization strategies.

This panel will feature the longitudinal experience of a national foundation in a specific sector and two nonprofits that have directly benefitted from deeper capitalization strategies to increase their capacity and mission effectiveness over time.  How can capital be aggregated and grown to support more scalable results?  What are the tangible links between capacity and results?  How is risk calibrated and shared?  Join us to learn from the experience of a leading foundation, two nonprofit partners and a national social policy research organization:
