In a commentary for McKinsey & Company, the former CEO of Campbell’s Soup Company makes the case for philanthropy as part of a business’s R & D toolbox. Doug Conant notes that during his decade as Campbell’s CEO the company’s social investments paid off in increased employee engagement and better market performance. Leveraging philanthropic initiatives “is a great way to learn about communities and their needs, and test new business strategies,” he writes. “The key is bringing good business insight and discipline to the process.”
