Remembering Henry Hillman

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Henry L. Hillman, who quietly gave of his time and money to become one of the most generous benefactors in the city of Pittsburgh’s history, died Friday, April 14 at the age of 98.  Together with his wife of more than 70 years, the late Elsie Hilliard Hillman, the Hillman name came to embody the highest ideals of contributing to the common good throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.

Hillman used the Hillman Foundation, started by his father in 1951, the Henry L. Hillman Foundation and his personal wealth to make generous community contributions throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.  Many were focused on science, technology and medicine, fields in which Mr. Hillman had a keen interest.  The Hillman Family Foundations have contributed some $430 million to organizations and projects throughout the country since 1951, according to David Roger, the organization's president.

GWP staff extend their sincere condolences to the entire Hillman family and to our colleagues at Hillman Family Foundations, as they come to terms with the loss of Henry and Elsie.  Everyone who lives in or cares about greater Pittsburgh is in their debt.
