Philanthropy and Gun Violence

Foundations across the U.S. are pondering how they can respond to the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. The Foundation Center's IssueLab offers a selection of reports on what the social sector has learned about gun violence, many based on research funded by foundations such as the Joyce, California Wellness, MacArthur, and Gerbode Foundations.

For those who wish to assist Newtown, Connecticut Council for Philanthropy has compiled a webpage of useful resources, including ways to donate to response efforts as well as group or individual funds. United Way of Western Connecticut is accepting donations to support both immediate and ongoing needs in the Newtown community. Additionally, the Fairfield County Community Foundation is accepting contributions to establish a scholarship fund; address mental health issues in Fairfield County; and help victims' families create charitable memorial funds.
