Pennsylvania WIC Program In Need Of State Funding

Friday, May 24, 2019

In an op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Karen Wolk Feinstein, president of the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, stresses the importance of the WIC program and how it can be improved with additional state funding. She notes that WIC can serve as a connector for families at critical times and in critical circumstances – for those living near poverty, women with HIV or substance use disorders, those with mental health issues or other complex health challenges, and teen mothers. An investment of $7.5 million in state funds for fiscal year 2019-2020 would allow WIC to staff up to 2014 levels, increase its outreach and enrollment, and expand programs. Pennsylvania also could revitalize its WIC program by adopting best practices from around the country.
