One-day giving event to benefit Pittsburgh region's needy

The Pittsburgh Foundation aims to raise more than $1 million for the region’s hungry, homeless and other people in need through a one-day, online fundraising event set for May 23.

The new fundraiser, #SafetyNetPGH, is part of the foundation’s ongoing series of critical needs alerts that seek public support for nonprofit agencies providing human services.

For this year at least, #SafetyNetPGH will replace the foundation’s Day of Giving event that in the past has generated millions of dollars for nonprofits, including human service agencies and others with missions ranging from education and historic preservation to community development, refugee assistance and the arts.  The Day of Giving may return in the future, but with the possibility of drastic cuts in government funding for social assistance programs, the foundation wants to focus on raising money for the region’s most disadvantaged residents.
