Nonprofits and Foundations’ Tax Forms Are Now Open Data

Friday, June 17, 2016

Electronically filed Form 990s, including private foundations’ 990-PFs, can now be much more easily searched and analyzed.  On June 16, the IRS made those forms available through being made available through the Public Data Sets area of Amazon Web Services.  In the past, all Form 990s were public information, but as images (such as PDF files), which made searching and analyzing them a time consuming process.  With this change, the public can download and manipulate the information directly.  Read about the ramifications of this shift for the charitable sector, and also the blog post by Foundation Center president Brad Smith.
