Mayor Confident in Agreement With Nonprofits

Thursday, October 2, 2014

As reported in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and Tribune-Review, Mayor Bill Peduto recently expressed confidence that the city can reach a long term agreement with some of Pittsburgh’s largest nonprofits.  The city’s 2004 recovery plan under Act 47 for distressed municipalities led to creation of the Pittsburgh Public Service Fund, which solicited voluntary contributions from tax-exempt institutions.  Mayor Peduto now hopes to design new partnerships with Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Highmark and UPMC by the end of 2014.   The mayor aims to steer contributions from nonprofits to infrastructure upgrades, employee pensions and housing in low-income neighborhoods; the nonprofit community representatives are looking for ways to partner with the city while making sure the agreement is fair and equitable and includes all other nonprofits as well.
