Pittsburgh Magazine honors Max King as Pittsburgher of the Year for the many civic-minded things he has accomplished in the past two decades. Max has left his imprint in the community during his time as President of the Heinz Foundation, Co-chair of the Riverlife Task Force, Director of the Fred Rogers Center and CEO of The Pittsburgh Foundation. He has been recently designated as the official biographer of Fred Rogers.
King has been able to influence the city’s civic leaders to address economic issues, the environment, literacy including:
- Establishing the Riverlife Task Force through a major grant from The Heinz Endowments. The task force was responsible for leading the waterfront renovation project around the city's riverbanks.
- Creating the Pittsburgh Promise scholarship program with funding from UPMC to students at Pittsburgh Public Schools
- Returning to Pittsburgh to lead The Pittsburgh Foundation and launching 100 percent Pittsburgh which has given over $22 million in grants under that program
