Funding Women Of Color Leading Social Change

Tuesday, November 19, 2019

Vanessa Daniel is the founder and Executive Director of Groundswell Fund, the largest funder of the U.S. reproductive justice movement and of Groundswell Action Fund, the largest fund in the country centering giving to women of color-led 501c4 organizations.  In a recent New York Times piece, Ms. Daniel shares her thoughts on the lack of diversity in philanthropy. She noticed that women of color who lead grass-roots nonprofits — are wildly underrepresented in funding. Only 0.6 percent of foundation giving was targeted to women of color in 2016. She details the reasons she thinks this is happening and shares her thoughts on how funders can shift their giving to organizations led by women and build the power of communities.
