Benedum Foundation Announces President’s Retirement

Tuesday, December 19, 2017

The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation has announced that William P. Getty will step down as President effective June 30, 2018, or as soon thereafter as the next President is installed.  Mr. Getty will continue to work for the Foundation after July 1 in the role of Regional Facilitator.  Diversified Search, headquartered in Philadelphia, will lead the search for a new President.  Mr. Getty has been the President since January 1, 1999, and has been a Trustee of the Foundation since July 1, 1994.  Prior to becoming President, Mr. Getty had practiced law since 1970 with the Pittsburgh firm of Meyer, Unkovic & Scott.

Board Chair, former West Virginia State Senator Lloyd Jackson, said, “While the Benedum Trustees recognize this is a well-deserved retirement, Pat Getty’s departure will be a great loss to the Foundation and particularly to the citizens of West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania.  He has been a real champion for the area and especially for the regional cooperation he has fostered over many years.  The Trustees are pleased that Mr. Getty will be assisting the Foundation after stepping down as President as our Regional Facilitator, to help maintain the momentum that has been built in a number of regional projects in which our Foundation partners.”

The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation was established in 1944 by Michael and Sarah Benedum, natives of West Virginia, as a memorial to their only child, Claude Worthington, who died in 1918 at the age of 20.  The Foundation is a regional grant maker focusing primarily on West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania, which region it has served for 73 years.  Grants are made to support specific initiatives in the areas of Education, Economic Development, Health and Human Services, and Community Development.  The Foundation recognizes that economic regions do not follow political boundaries, and, therefore, the Foundation both encourages projects that cross state lines and supports economic and education initiatives that benefit the multi-state region centered on Pittsburgh.
