The Buhl Foundation, a longtime funder on the North Side, will partner with Comcast and Urban Innovation 21 to invest a total of $8.8 million in a new strategy to revitalize the concourse portion of the former Allegheny Center shopping mall. The Buhl Foundation announced it will grant $6.5 million for the first two years of its 20-year partnership with One Pittsburgh, which expects to pursue new entrepreneurship at Nova Place; Comcast will invest $1.3 million in cash and services to install Pittsburgh’s first public Xfinity WiFi, with one-gigabit-per-second connection speeds; and Urban Innovation 21 will invest $1 million to also contribute to the cost of installing the new public WiFi, a venue-specific approach that will also include plug-in option for Internet access at new collaboration pods built out throughout the open floor of the concourse area.
