Funders are often described—and describe themselves—as being able to take risks that neither the private sector nor the government can or will take. However, no industry standard currently exists for defining, assessing, and managing risk in philanthropy. Few grantmakers assess risk during the application process and even fewer have processes in place to manage risks to impact after a grant is made. Without being aware of the parameters of risk, one can’t adequately plan or manage risk, let alone take the risk. This is even more salient for leanly staffed funders who must leverage their resources for impact.

In this webinar, Maya Winkelstein, Executive Director of Open Road Alliance, will share a framework for leanly staffed funders to consider “risk” in their grantmaking. Drawing from the latest data and research on risk management as well as Open Road’s own portfolio analysis of 100+ investments, Maya will share insights on “what goes wrong” in the social sector and what can be done to mitigate those risks. She will also share highlights from the Risk Management for Philanthropy Toolkit, which offers practical tools that can be adapted and adopted by funders of any size.

This webinar will encourage thoughtful consideration of risks to impact so that funders can make fully informed decisions about what risks they are willing to take and how to manage those risks – increasing the probability of successful grantmaking activities.
