“Philanthropy and Climate Change: A new model for building urban resilience”

How can philanthropy, nonprofits and foundations address macro-level issues, such as climate change and sea-level rise? Government aid and other public-sector development funding is slowing down. That means groups looking to build stronger cities are increasingly seeking resources from philanthropy and the private sector. But many questions remain about how to leverage partnerships and achieve at the city level what philanthropy craves most: impact.

The Miami Foundation has played a central role in bringing major players together to collaborate on a regional strategy addressing sea-level rise. In 2016, the Foundation was behind Greater Miami and the Beaches joining the 100 Resilient Cities network, an initiative powered by The Rockefeller Foundation to help cities around the world build resilience on these global issues.

Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation, will share how they did this, lessons learned and insights on how philanthropy can expand impact on climate change and build urban resilience by engaging in the civic space.
