Over the past two years, leaders from five GWP member organizations, McCune Foundation, Hillman Foundations, Benter Foundation, Heinz Endowments, and R.K. Mellon Foundation, have convened with a shared commitment to enhance the capacity of local nonprofits. They have explored the challenges and opportunities in capacity-building and have invested in research and planning, including an overview of regional capacity-building resources and a national scan of nonprofit capacity-building centers.

This group seeded a Capacity Building Initiative that is now working on the development of pilot programs and initiatives that will support the needs of small and midsized nonprofits, with an initial focus on Fund Development and Financial Management & Strategy. The Initiative, led by Kate Sphar Consulting, is engaging nonprofit leaders, financial and fundraising professionals, consultants, funders, and capacity-building intermediaries in intensive visioning and design sessions this fall and into early 2024. Further feedback for these pilots will be solicited through charrettes and open houses from November 2023 to January 2024, with pilot designs and long-term recommendations expected by March 2024.

The entire foundation community likely shares concerns about the fragmented resources available to nonprofit leaders and boards when they attempt to strengthen their organizations. GWP members are invited to join this session to learn more about the progress of this initiative, share their own ideas, and explore opportunities to contribute to future efforts in strengthening nonprofit capacity.

Speakers: Jocelyn Horner Kelly, McCune Foundation, and Project Consultants Kate Sphar and Mary Phan-Gruber

This will be a virtual session; connection details will be sent upon registration.
