What happens when a food desert gets an oasis?  Is an easily accessible store location the most important factor when it comes to encouraging healthy choices at the supermarket? How much does in-store display and marketing of junk foods relative to healthy foods effect obesity?

Join Grantmakers of Western Pennsylvania’s Food Funders group as Tamara Dubowitz, senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation, joins us to answer these and many more questions associated with her research around food-policy related issues.

Trained in social epidemiology with concentrations in maternal and child health and public health nutrition, Tamara’s specializations include neighborhood effects, particularly of the built physical and social environment, on food choices; obesity and diet-related disease; and the health and nutrition outcomes of social policies such as housing, food assistance and WIC programs.

In addition to spending more than two years working on women's health programs and development with the Peace Corps in Burkina Faso, West Africa, Tamara led an evaluation of a maternal and child nutrition program led by UNICEF India.  More recently, she has looked at factors in the built environment and their association with prevalence of obesity here in Pittsburgh.

This will be a brown-bag meeting, so feel free to bring your lunch.  HEALTHY snacks and beverages will be provided.
