Family foundations are poised to see an unprecedented change in leadership over the next few years as the next generation of philanthropists begins to take over governance roles. NCFP’s 2015 Trends Study found that 56% of family foundations engage younger family members in the foundation’s work. In an increasingly interconnected world that is constantly influx it is important to train new philanthropic leaders so that they are able to effectively address some of the most pressing social issues. Join us for our next webinar on March 17, 2016 from 12:00- 1:30 pm as we learn from several national organizations - including the Nexus Global Youth SummitResource Generation, and Youth Philanthropy Connect - actively engaging young philanthropists in a variety of innovative ways.

Featured speakers

Biz Ghormley brings over a decade of experience in non-profits and philanthropy to EPIP. Analytical and passionate, she began her career on the front lines of justice as a bilingual investigator for the Bronx Defenders. Biz has since leveraged her skills building relationships and weaving story, strategy and data to fundraise millions of dollars, co-lead national member networks, design and run events and campaigns, and improve systems within organizations of all sizes. She grew her entrepreneurial skill-set at Digital Democracy, one of Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Companies”, and has worked as a consultant and team member at a range of social service, legal and arts organizations. A former Starting Bloc Fellow and member of Coro Leadership New York, Biz holds a BA from Wesleyan University and a MS from NYU.

Brendan Adams, a high school freshman, is a junior board member for the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Foundation, located in the great state of Texas. Brendan first began his philanthropy training in the Spring of 2014 with his first of many site visits.  As his passion for philanthropy grew, he attended his first Youth Philanthropy Connect (YPC) conference shortly after and became a member of the Leadership Team in 2014. Brendan has helped plan YPC's regional gathering in Houston, TX and is now helping plan the YPC 2016 International Conference in Anaheim, CA.  Brendan has used the tools he has learned through YPC and applied those skills towards his role with the Junior Board, by recently choosing to fund 6 non-profits in the Laredo, Texas area. The first of many milestones! 

Iris Brilliant is the National Organizer And Coordinator of Family Philanthropy at Resource Generation. She grew up in the Marin County, CA and currently lives in Oakland, CA. She was a part of the RG Bay Area Leadership Team, where she formed the first ever Jewish Praxis group, which explored the intersection of class privilege and Jewish identity and history. Iris has been engaged in institutional philanthropy and family giving for over a decade. After attending numerous philanthropy conferences as one of a few young adults, she realized the need for a stronger nextgen presence in philanthropy. She is passionate about supporting the leadership development of young adults in the philanthropic world and their implementation of social change values into philanthropy. In her spare time, she sings with a folk band, studies somatic coaching, practices Hatha yoga, reads magical realism and instigates conversations about money with strangers.

Mary Galeti serves as the Vice-Chair of the Tecovas Foundation which funds social innovation and entrepreneurship by focusing on leveraging new service models. Mary served on the Board of the Council on Foundations. Mary also serves as a member of the Board of the Global Shapers. She is the Vice-Chair of the StartingBloc Social Innovation Fellowship Program. She was recently named a Babson Senior Fellow on Social Innovation. She has spoken on the issues of generational transition and leadership cultivation in philanthropy and the nonprofit space at many venues, including the Council on Foundations, the White House, the UN, and Nexus.

Katherine Scott joined the Frieda C. Fox Family Foundation to lead Youth Philanthropy Connect. Katherine came to the Foundation from the Boston Foundation, where she managed an online platform for donors profiling best practices of  nonprofits and building the capacity of nonprofit leaders. Previously, she has worked at other foundations in organizational effectiveness, training nonprofit leaders, and donor services. Katherine is excited to have her career come full circle as she began her experience in philanthropy in high school as a Youth Advisory Council member and leader. She holds a BA from Wittenberg University and an MA in Philanthropic Studies from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and MPA in Nonprofit Management from SPEA from Indiana University, Indianapolis. Katherine serves as the due diligence chair and a board member of a private foundation, SheGives, and on the Lilly Family School Alumni Board. Katherine lives in Boston.

Andrea Zucker is the Outreach Coordinator of Nexus Global Youth Summit.  She is also a writer, activist, and social impact investor who believes that each of us should harness our personal gifts to find our best ways to give.  A native of Charleston, South Carolina, her parents modeled the importance of community involvement from her earliest days and taught her that her role as a human being is to help repair the world in whatever ways possible.  Andrea was shaped by early experiences in community activism through Youth Service Charleston and Operation Understanding and went on to work in the nonprofit world professionally with The Coastal Community Foundation, United Way of America, and United Way International.  She also works with the InterTech Group, Inc. a privately owned company that incorporates philanthropy and community involvement into its corporate philosophy.  Andrea taught briefly in the DC public school system and is passionate about equal access to educational resources.  She is also devoted to creating a safer and better environment through reducing dependence on oil and innovating in the clean energy sector and serves on the board of SAFE, Securing America’s Future Energy.
