In a powerful counter to the blame-laden narrative we often hear about American poverty, our panelists for GWP’s 2020 annual meeting will share their thoughts on how to eliminate poverty through intensive listening and the leadership of families who have experienced poverty firsthand.
Following GWP’s business meeting, we will be joined in conversation by Luz Vega-Marquis. Luz retired recently as the founding President and CEO of the Marguerite Casey Foundation, which has dedicated its resources to building a movement of low-income families advocating on their own behalf. This conversation with Luz coincides with the release of her new book Ask, Listen, Act: A New Model for Philanthropy. Luz will be joined by Tammy Thompson, Executive Director of Circles of Pittsburgh. Tammy is a national speaker and expert on the psychology of poverty, as well as Executive Producer of We Wear the Mask, a documentary released in 2017 highlighting the stigma associated with women in poverty. Their discussion will be moderated by GWP member, Laura Rock, founder of the Rock Family Foundation.
We can expect a dynamic conversation that will include an examination of poverty -- both its root causes and its lived experience – as well as a discussion of how to end it through trust, empowerment, and movement building.
Please note:
- This will be offered as a virtual meeting. Connection details will be shared after registration.
