Fiscal sponsorship, when executed correctly, can be of great value as an alternative to starting a nonprofit. It can also produce cost efficiencies through shared administration and reduce the number of freestanding nonprofits that requiring fiduciary and regulatory oversight.
However, grantmakers who are considering requests to fund sponsored projects need to ensure that both parties to the arrangement understand their responsibilities. Staff and trustees of nonprofits that are considering acting as a fiscal sponsor need to ensure that the organization is exercising an appropriate level of due diligence and control, and that there may be circumstances under which the organization should say “no” to a sponsorship request. Additionally, differences in organizational cultures may also need to be navigated; for a fiscal sponsorship to be successful, these differences should also be considered in advance.
Join other GWP members and potential fiscal sponsors to hear from Carolyn Duronio, Partner at Reed Smith and one of the nation’s leading experts on exempt organizations. Carolyn will review the ins and outs of having and being a fiscal sponsor. She will share what organizations can do to avoid potential problems when entering into a fiscal sponsorship agreement and what funders should look for when reviewing requests to support a fiscal sponsorship.
Additionally, Kate Dewey, president of The Forbes Funds, will be on hand to help us think through the cultural and organizational considerations around being a host and/or selecting a host.
Thanks to all attendees for respecting GWP's solicitation-free environment.
